Changing Lives. The Community Assistance Network, Inc. (CAN)'s Mission is to work in partnership with the community to develop, operate, and support programs that reduce vulnerability and empower personal growth, dignity, stability and self-sufficiency among people in Baltimore County experiencing economic challenges. CAN is a Baltimore County-based non-profit organization, established in 1965 as part of a national network of over 1, 000 Community Action Agencies.

CAN provides healthy food throughout Baltimore County to eligible residents. The supplemental food package provides enough food for approximately 5 to 7 days. There are monthly educational workshops, which are free to the public. These workshops aim to aide residents regarding nutrition, meal planning, and healthy snacks for children and food preparation.
CAN operates Baltimore County’s Westside Men's Shelter, serving a population of over 250 men, women, and children each day. Housing specialists are located at the shelter to assist residents with finding housing and conduct follow-up after an individual has moved out of the shelter. CAN also operates the Samaritan Housing Initiative Program, federally funded by HUD to house and provide support to 15 chronically homeless men and women in Baltimore County with a diagnosed disability.
Providing Support in the community, CAN has placed qualified Community Resource Specialists (CRS) to assist with rental and utility assistance. Contact a CRS near you for an immediate consultation.
CAN provides quality training, education, and resources to raise people’s knowledge and awareness about money management, credit scores, and cash flow for the purpose of eliminating financial stress and creating self-sufficiency. All activities include action steps for clients to move themselves toward greater stability and growth. Individual customers receiving services from CAN review their budgets with a Community Resource Specialist and identify areas for implementing change. Financial literacy program training provides a basic understanding of money, learning to prioritize needs, and make critical financial decisions. Located at Fontana Village Community Center, the After School Program's purpose is to provide a safe environment to promote a successful school year and summer break for students and parents. This includes assisting with homework and recreational activities that teach life skills in healthy decision making. These activities are provided by various community partnerships and Roberta Mosby, After School Program Director. Initiatives with local schools enable parents to work more effectively with children.
